Happy Anniversary and Obey Butterstick

Well, today marked my parents' 57th anniversary. Yep, the big five-seven. Married on this day in 1949 at the belated Savoy Plaza Hotel (where the GM Building is now in New York City, for those who know that city).

I spoke to them earlier this evening and, as usual, asked my mom "So, when are you getting divorced?" A question I've jokingly asked her for several years now. She laughed, as usual.

She sounded a bit sad, tho. Dunno why. They didn't do anything special this evening and they only got 2 "Happy Anniversary" cards; one from me and one from the couple that introduced them on a blind date 59 years ago. My sister completely spaced it. Didn't even call them. I told my mom to enjoy giving her a guilt trip about it. She was planning to.

Hearing my mother sounding sad always makes me feel horrid but I tried to cheer her up by talking about something more positive and she seemed to be sounding better when we finished the phone call.

SHOCKING!

Poor startled Tubbs and Edward; caught me coveting the precious things of the shop. Anyway, I'm still alive but just been busy with school, Flickr, and lotsa e-mail from a listserv I joined.

I hope to post something a wee bit more substantial this weekend.

In the meantime, here's something definitely shocking!:

Spacing Out

For all you "Battlestar Galactica" and Lucy Lawless fans out there, it seems that she'll be back for a 10 episode story arc as D'Anna Biers! She'll start filming those in April but will be in one episode on February 24th.

For those DC Comics superheros fans, the Post Office will be issuing stamps during the last half of this year.

OOH! Something to Bake One Day!

CINNAMON-SCENTED DEVIL'S FOOD CUPCAKES
Vanilla and Almond Frosting is an accompaniment for this recipe.

30 2 1/2-inch-wide by 1 1/2-inch-high paper panettone molds
Nonstick vegetable oil spray
2 2/3 cups all purpose flour
1 1/2 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
3 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/4 cups freshly brewed coffee, cooled to room temperature
1 1/4 cups buttermilk
3/4 cup vegetable oil
2 large eggs
2 large egg yolks
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups (about 7 ounces) mini semisweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 325°F. Lightly spray insides of 30 paper molds with nonstick spray; arrange paper molds on 2 large rimmed baking sheets. Sift flour, cocoa, cinnamon, baking powder, salt, and baking soda into large bowl. Combine sugar, coffee, buttermilk, oil, eggs, egg yolks, and vanilla in another large bowl. Using electric mixer, beat egg mixture until blended. Add dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed until blended, scraping bowl occasionally, about 4 minutes. Stir in chocolate chips.

Spoon 1/4 cup batter into each paper mold. Bake cupcakes, 1 sheet at a time, until puffed and center is just firm to touch, about 24 minutes. Transfer cupcakes to racks and cool completely.

Frost cupcakes with almond frosting. (Can be made ahead. Arrange cupcakes in deep disposable roasting pans. Cover pans with foil. Refrigerate up to 2 days, or store at room temperature 1 day. Bring chilled cupcakes to room temperature before serving.)

Decorate cupcakes with mini roses up to 4 hours before serving.

Makes 30.

In Memoriam

Al Lewis, grandpa on TV's "The Munsters," dies.

"The Munsters" and "The Addams Family" were two of the shows I always watched as a child. I didn't know how accomplished Lewis was until I read the article! I knew he ran for political office in New York, ran a reataurant, and coached basketball but I didn't know he also wrote a couple of children's books when he was much younger as well as receiving a Ph.D. in child psychology from Columbia plus several other interesting jobs over the years! I also never realized he was so tall (6'1")!
